If you're new or experienced to the prospect of dating Russian women, the age-old question of age might be very much on your mind. The formula that is frequently tossed around when this question is discussed is that you should look for a woman no younger than one half your age plus 7 years. Therefore, the low end for a 30 year old man would be 22. The low end for a 50 year old man would be 32. In the first case, the age difference is a mere 8 years, in the second, it's 18. Although a simple formula like this is nice to have, it does not provide a definitive answer to the question “How much is too much?”

Taking a number out of context will tell you very little about compatibility. A very important consideration when thinking about the age of your prospective partner is children. Do you have them? Do you want them? Do you mind if she has children already? A man who has no children but wants to have some in the future will be able to form a relationship with a much younger woman than a man who already has grown children and does not want to have any more. Men who are in their late thirties or older and who are willing to meet Russian women who have children already may find women 15 years or more their junior who would like to meet an older man who is already settled and able to be a good father as well as a good husband. Having children has a definite effect on the maturity level of a woman; a 25 year old mother will likely be far more mature than a 25 year old woman without children.

Once you know where you stand on the issue of children, the next thing you should consider is your health and activity level. A Russian woman in her twenties is much more likely to be attracted to a significantly older man who is fit and active than she is in a man the same age who does not take care of himself physically and does not have varied interests in activities outside the home. A good rule of thumb on this issue is to consider how compatible you would be with a woman of the same nationality as yourself. If you are in your late forties, and you know that you'd have difficulty finding a compatible woman in your home country in her early twenties, then it might not be the best idea to seek out a Russian woman in her early twenties either.

It is not common to see large age differences in Russian marriages, so it would not be at all safe to assume that every Russian woman on a Russian dating site is looking for a much older man. An age difference of ten years or less will usually be acceptable to both parties. Any more than that should never be taken for granted. If a woman specifies an age range in her profile, and you fall far outside of that, do not be surprised if she does not respond to your attempts to contact her.

There really is no simple answer to the question of appropriate age differences when it comes to dating. However, knowing the range that feels comfortable to you is the first step. Knowing that the greater the age difference, the more difficulty you may have finding what you're looking for is the second. Russian women cannot be characterized by a number alone. Building a life with someone is about so much more than age and appearance, and although it is always good to have an idea of what you want, be prepared to throw it out the window if the right one for you falls outside your parameters.

Wed, 08 Feb 2012 23:21:28 GMT Apple's patent plea: Stop Samsung and Motorola from holding us hostage (Digital Trends)
Digital Trends - The world of patent licensing often seems like a maze of twisty little passages, all alike, but every so often the industry stumbles into a new tunnel — or, at least, one that seems new at first glance. Such is the case with Apple, which has asked the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to establish a set of basic principles governing so-called fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) licensing of patented technologies included in wireless communications standards. That sentence may make many consumers’ eyes glaze over, but it boils down to this: Apple wants rules saying that if a company contributes their technology to a standard, they don’t get to use that technology to beat up competitors who use that standard.

Wed, 08 Feb 2012 20:22:33 GMT The U.S. and China: A Duel to the Debt (The Motley Fool)
The Motley Fool - In this period of "exceptional uncertainty" (to quote Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke), where can investors turn for a considered perspective on the current environment? Produced to feed the beast of the 24-hour news cycle, the bulk of financial journalism and commentary today isn't worth the servers it is stored on. One notable exception to that rule is Buttonwood, the financial markets column of The Economist. Philip Coggan is the columnist -- arguably the most influential position in financial journalism (along with the head of Lex at the Financial Times).
